Carbon tax on households should be abolished!

2026. 11. 04.

The European Parliament’s Committee for Environment, Climate, and Food Safety (ENVI) held a debate on Wednesday on the revision of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS). The system can have a fundamental impact on the competitiveness of European industry, energy prices and the cost of living of households. The ETS2 scheme, which increases the burden on households and puts the reduction in household utility bills at risk, needs to be completely withdrawn.

In its current form, the ETS places a significant burden on European businesses, contributes to high energy prices and increases the competitive disadvantage of European industry. The review should therefore bring about a real change of direction: it should focus on reducing the burden on the economy, affordable energy and protecting jobs in Europe.

In his speech, Viktória Ferenc, MEP of the Patriots for Europe group, called for the complete abolition of ETS2, the emissions trading system extended to buildings and road transport. He called on the People’s Party to take into account the support of the right-wing majority in Parliament. Indeed, the costs of the system to be introduced in 2028 would ultimately be paid by families through the increase in heating and transport costs.

The MEP also stressed the responsibility of the EPP, as several EPP MEPs are demanding the abolition of ETS2 along common sense. The question arises as to why not all delegations of the group, especially from Central Europe, represent this position. “It is particularly interesting that the representatives of the Tisza Party have also not tabled an amendment to abolish ETS2. This rightly raises the question: how committed are they really to the reduction of household utility bills that protect Hungarian families if they do not even take action to abolish the new EU carbon tax on households?” – added Viktória Ferenc after the debate.
